THE BLESSEDNESS OF MEEKNESS

By the ‘Blessedness of meekness’ we are referring to ‘the good things that follow meekness and make for happiness’ viz: satisfaction, Divine guidance, Peace and Prosperity, Divine deliverance, Divine exaltation, Comprehensive victory, etc.

Meekness brings satisfaction – (Ps. 22:26).  This has to do with being full or sufficed (cons. Ps. 17:15; 36:7-8; 37:18-19; 103:2-5).

Meekness enhances divine guidance – (cons. Ps. 25:9).  The mind free of the turbulence of self assertion will more easily pick up the still small voice and other soft signals of the Lord than the heart laden with the murmurs of self will (cons. Jos. 3:2-4; 1Kgs. 19:10-13; Ps. 32:7-8).

Meekness begets peace and prosperity – (Ps. 37:11). The word ‘inherit’ was translated from the Hebrew word ‘yarash’ (pronounced yaw-rash) while means ‘To occupy by driving out previous tenants, and possessing in their places; by implication to seize.  The same picture can be seen in the statement of Jesus in Matthew. 5:5 where the word ‘inherit’ was translated from the Greek Klērŏnŏmĕō (pronounced klay-ron-om-eh’-o) which strictly means “receive by lot” but in a more general sense “To possess onself of, to receive as one’s own, to obtain.  So when the grace (of meekness) has been wrought in the soul, peace will naturally follow and divine favour that yields prosperity would be there (Ps. 111:6; 119:65; Prov. 13:22b; Isa. 45:2-3).

Meekness is always followed by Divine Deliverance (cons. Ps. 76:6-9).  The rare beauty radiated by the meek makes it incumbent on the Lord to deliver and preserve such from untimely death and destruction (cons. Num. 12:1-10; Matt. 18:6-7; Act. 16:23-26).  In fact, faith in the meek wrought by knowledge of God’s goodness and power is a catalyst for divine deliverance.

Meekness attracts Divine exaltation (cons. Ps. 147:6).  Meekness is a quality built and cherished by God (Phil. 2:13; Gal. 5:22-23).  However, the working of this grace cannot be if a believer is unwilling hence the Lord’s injunction to learn of Him (Matt. 11:29).  The ingredients of lowliness and faith lead to divine exaltation (Prov. 15:33; 18:12; Jas. 4:6-7a; 1Pet. 5:6).  The God of Israel is a lifter-up of the downtrodden; He rises up the lowly, gives relief to the afflicted and stands as a defender of the oppressed.

Comprehensive Victory (Ps. 149:4).  The word salvation was translated from the Hebrew yeshuwah which means ‘something saved’, it is used for ‘deliverance’; and ‘victory’ and ‘prosperity’.  The Psalmist revealed that the Lord will beautify (adorn) the meek with salvation (deliverance, aid, victory, prosperity).  Definitely the thus adorned is comprehensively (broadly) victorious.

The beauty and array of blessings attached to meekness explains why it was described as an ornament (by the translators) in 1Pet. 3:4.
